A 43-year-old Palmela firefighter died this Wednesday morning while preparing to take a certification test to join the fire apparatus’ Continuous Intervention Teams (EIP) for 2024.
The death of victim Paulo Cardoso occurred in the area of Sobreda de Caparica, Almada, on an athletics track usually used by the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) for firefighter certification tests.
A source associated with the Civil Defense told the CM that the 43-year-old firefighter collapsed while preparing to begin the physical test. He was still taken to Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon with vital signs. He died upon admission to this department of the hospital.
“Paulo was an exemplary firefighter. I dealt with him for 27 years and he was always completely committed to the fire department,” explained CM Otavio Machado, former president of the Palmela Fire Department.
