The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights this Friday condemned the “intimidation and harassment” of lawyers and media representatives in Tunisia who criticize the government and migration policies.
The searches against the Tunisian Bar “undermine the rule of law and violate international standards for protecting the independence and functions of lawyers. Such actions constitute a form of intimidation and harassment,” said Ravina Shamdasani, representative of the High Commission in Geneva. at a press conference.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk “calls on the authorities to respect and protect the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly guaranteed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, of which Tunisia is a party.” emphasized Ravina Shamdasani.
“The rule of law must be respected, and people arbitrarily detained, especially for defending the rights of migrants and fighting racial discrimination, must be released,” he added, stressing that “the human rights of all migrants must be protected and xenophobic hate speech must stop “
Shamdasani said the High Commission was “very concerned that migrants, mainly from southern Sahara, and the people and organizations that help them, are increasingly being targeted in Tunisia.”
The same official condemned the “increasing use of inhumane and racist rhetoric against black migrants and black Tunisians.”
On Thursday, Tunisian President Kais Said, in power since July 2021, criticized Western abuses of human rights and the rule of law in Tunisia, while defending the legality of the country’s measures.
