Mozambican President congratulates “stability” in Renamo on Momade’s re-election

Mozambican President and leader of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), Filipe Nyusi, congratulated Ossufo Momade as leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the largest opposition party) on his re-election for the “stability” he represents.

“Everything ended well. Things are going turbulently, but above all it meant the stability of the party, our competitor in the elections, but our friend in the development of Mozambique,” the head of state said, addressing journalists during a review of the visit. he stayed until Friday – fair in Rwanda.

“I would like to take this moment to congratulate you, as, in this case, the President of the Frelimo Party. This is a gesture that means political stability, but whoever is elected, satisfying the wishes of the Renamo members, we would be ready to continue working on the collective dossiers. The biggest collective dossier rings in the ears of Mozambicans: “This is peace,” he added.

He admitted that “if a new person were elected to lead Renamo,” the congress that ended on Friday would take “some time” to “renew” some processes, chief among them disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (GDR). of 5,221 former Renamo guerrillas, according to the agreement that Nyusi signed with the party.

“Congratulate Renamo itself for taking an important step towards democracy in our country, and we are ready to cooperate with a political partner. This is the only way we can develop the country, with different ideas, but with a common goal, namely the good of being Mozambican,” he added.

Renamo’s re-elected President Ossufo Momade assured on Friday that he had remaining candidates vying for the leadership of the largest opposition party in Congress and that “no one can be left behind.”

“First of all, I want to thank you for the trust you have placed in Ossufo Momada. Thank you and I promise to work with everyone. With all candidates. So that you can join us, no one can be left behind,” Ossufo Momade said at the convention after the official results were announced, in which he won the internal elections with 57% of the votes among nine candidates.

Renamo’s legal council confirmed on Friday the election of Ossufo Momade as president of the party he has led since 2019, receiving 57% of the vote at a congress held since Wednesday in Alto Molocue, Zambezia province, thus guaranteeing a new mandate. five years.

Renamo will have to clarify which candidate it will support for the presidency of the republic in the general elections on October 9, which is usually the party leader.

The published data, confirmed by the Jurisdictional Council of Renamo, gave victory to Ossufo Momada with 382 votes among nine candidates.

Since January 17, 2019, Renamo has been headed by 63-year-old Ossufo Momade, elected after the death of the party’s historical leader Afonso Dhlakama (1953-2018).

According to the jurisdictional council, Elias Dhlakama, the brother of the party’s historical leader, received 147 votes, and Ivone Soares, a lawmaker and former head of the parliamentary college, the first woman to run for the leadership of Renamo, received 78 votes.

The Congress was marked by the exclusion of the candidacy of Venancio Mondlane, deputy and candidate of the party, in the municipal elections for the municipality of Maputo in October 2023, as not meeting the profile requirements determined by the party bodies.

Mondlane went to court to have his nomination included, but despite the court’s precautions, Congress did not change the list of candidates on the ballot or allow him to attend the main meeting.

Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9 that include, in addition to legislative and provincial elections, presidential elections in which current President Filipe Nyusi can no longer participate because he has reached the constitutional limit of two terms.
