At least six people were killed, three Spaniards and three Afghans, and several others were injured in a shooting in the city of Bamiyan in central Afghanistan. Among the wounded were Norwegians, Australians, Lithuanians, and Spaniards.
The attack happened on Friday when a man opened fire indiscriminately on a group of 13 people near a market in this tourist town, home to giant Buddhas destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
Four suspects were detained. “The Islamic State of Afghanistan strongly condemns this accident, expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and guarantees that all criminals will be found and punished,” said a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Internal Affairs. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was “shocked.” A diplomatic delegation will travel to Afghanistan to repatriate the bodies of three tourists from the Catalan region, as well as a woman, also Catalan, who was seriously injured, and two other Spaniards who escaped unharmed.
