A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi crashed this Sunday in the mountainous region of Varzakan, Iran, while returning from the opening ceremony of a dam on the border between Iran and Azerbaijan.
According to Reuters, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian was also on the plane. According to the country’s authorities, the lives of both politicians are under threat.
Rescue teams and paramedics were dispatched to the spot, and search efforts are continuing to locate the crew members. Fog and impassable terrain make operations difficult.
“We still have hope, but the information coming from the crash site is very alarming,” an Iranian official told the agency.
Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said, as quoted by IRNA, that due to difficult weather conditions, the search and rescue team may take some time to reach the crash site.
