Iranian President Ibrahim Raissi died in a helicopter crash

The Iranian government confirmed the death of President Ebrahim Raissi, but assured that the disaster would not cause “any disruption in the administration” of Iran.

Several Iranian state media reported this Monday that President Ebrahim Raissi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were killed in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran.

The information was first published by the Mehr news agency and the government newspaper Iran Daily. An Iranian official confirmed to Reuters the death of the president and foreign minister.

“The President of the Iranian people, hardworking and tireless, (…) sacrificed his life for the sake of the nation,” Tehran’s leader said in a statement after the first meeting after the accident.

“We assure our faithful, grateful and beloved people that with the help of God and the support of the people there will not be the slightest disruption in the governance of the country,” the Iranian government added.

Iranian rescue teams have recovered the remains of the president and eight other passengers in the helicopter that crashed on Sunday, the Red Crescent said.

“We are transporting the bodies of the martyrs to Tabriz,” the main city in the country’s northwest, Red Crescent chief Pirhossein Kulivand told state television as he announced the end of search operations.

The helicopter carrying Raisi was on a mountain in northwestern Iran this Monday, emergency services said, acknowledging they had little hope of finding survivors.

Hamas and Hezbollah expressed condolences over the death of Ibrahim Raisi

The Islamist movement Hamas today sent a message of condolences on the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, whom it considers “one of the best Iranian leaders” who provided “valuable support to the Palestinian cause.”

“He [Ebrahim Raisi] “has maintained an honorable position in support of our Palestinian cause, supporting the legitimate struggle of our people against the Zionist entity and its valuable support for the Palestinian resistance,” Hamas, the movement that has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, said in a statement.

The group also emphasized its “support in all forums and fields” for Hamas’ ongoing war against Israel in the Gaza Strip and its “intense political and diplomatic efforts to end the Zionist aggression against the Palestinian people.”

Pakistan declares day of mourning after death of Iranian President

Pakistan today declared a day of mourning in connection with the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash in the northwest of the country.

The heads of state of Venezuela, India and Iraq also expressed their condolences to Tehran over Sunday’s crash.

“Pakistan will observe a day of mourning and the flag will be flown at half-mast” as a sign of “solidarity with Iran,” a brotherly country, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on social network X (formerly Twitter).

EU expresses ‘sincere condolences’ over death of Iranian PR executive

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, expressed this Monday his “sincere condolences” on behalf of the European Union (EU) on the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
