Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi this Monday asked the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) to invest in crime prevention and control to continue to guarantee public safety of people and property.
“Crime is a social phenomenon that evolves in accordance with the development of technology and other social, technical and scientific fields,” said the Mozambican Head of State in his speech on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the creation of the PfP (May 17, 2018). 1975).
Philupe Nyusi said the Mozambique police force has “achieved a high level of growth and development” in preventing and combating various types of crime, despite a sharp increase in population, new technologies, technological developments and more that contribute to the emergence of new types of crimes. .
“We recommend [à polícia] continue to invest in models that prioritize crime prevention to counter prevailing criminal events and phenomena and effectively ensure the security of people and property,” he said.
In view of the general elections to be held on October 9, Nyusi said Mozambicans expect them to take place in an orderly manner: “In a cosmopolitan society like ours, where people of different races, colors and nationalities, different religions and party inclinations meet, the position of the police is fundamental to ensuring that differences of opinion or action are respected and contribute to the enrichment of the democratic structure.”
PRM celebrates its 49th anniversary at a time when Commander General Bernardino Rafael asked for an internal reflection on the “deviant behavior” of some employees in order to find solutions.
“We are reflecting on how to deal with agents who have a negative impact on the crime rate in our country,” the commander-general said in a May 14 statement to reporters in Maputo.
“We are looking into why this is happening to find out. The problem we discovered is that there is deviant behavior. [estamos a] think about how to get out of this situation,” he explained, answering a question about the contents of an internal circular on this topic, which the general command sent to all PfP units.
For several years, among other criminal activities, police officers have been linked to kidnappings, which continue to particularly trouble the Mozambican capital.
According to Bernardino Rafael, all organizations “analyze the behavioral situation of their employees” and, through assessment, discover the “weak point” in order to find solutions.
“Institutions exist in order to be able to benefit the population, society. So, we analyzed and saw that there is deviant behavior on the part of our police officers, some of them. And we decided, firstly, to carry out an internal instruction to reflect,” insisted He. .
Bernardino Rafael confirmed that one hundred PRM agents were expelled from the corporation in 2023. “When you read the circular, you are looking for a key word. The key word in this instruction is to reflect the deviant behavior of some agents. We send [a circular] think about it,” he said.
