Pope Francis considered that the Church cannot bless homosexual marriages, since they go “against the law of the Church,” he said in an interview with the publication CBS.
“The blessing of homosexual marriage is contrary to the law of the Church. (…) This cannot be done because it is not a sacrament. God did that. But blessing every person, why not?” he shot.
The statements come after the Vatican allowed Catholic priests to bless gay couples in December 2022.
“What I sanctioned was not a blessing of the union; it cannot be done because it is not a sacrament,” he explained.
The Pope argued that although the couple is not blessed, it can be done individually. “A blessing for everyone, for everyone. Some people are outraged by this, but why?” he asked.
