The far-right group Identity and Democracy in the European Parliament decided to expel the delegation of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party this Thursday, just a few days before the European elections on June 9, according to a report Reuters.
The decision followed comments made by Maximilian Kra, the AfD’s leading election candidate, in an Italian newspaper over the weekend in which he said Nazi SS troops “were not all criminals.”
“ID Group does not want to continue to be involved in incidents related to Maximilian Krach, head of the AfD list in the European elections,” the group said in a statement.
According to the same source, Maximilian Kra promised not to participate in the election campaign anymore, although he will continue to stand for election.
The far-right parties in the assembly are currently divided between the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the ID group, led by Marine Le Pen.
