Around 37 million adolescents aged 13 to 15 worldwide use tobacco, and in many countries e-cigarette consumption exceeds that of adults, the WHO said this Thursday.
In the WHO European Region, around 20% of 15-year-olds surveyed said they had used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days, according to a report released today.
“Despite important advances in reducing tobacco consumption, the emergence of e-cigarettes and other new tobacco and nicotine products poses a serious threat to young people and tobacco control,” WHO warned.
During the online press conference, experts spoke about the wide range of flavors (16,000 items) and new products launched through advertising campaigns aimed at youth.
Research in the US has shown that more than 70% of young e-cigarette users would quit smoking if these products were only available in tobacco flavors.
Research shows that e-cigarette consumption is almost three times higher than regular cigarette consumption, especially among young non-smokers.
According to the WHO, eight million deaths worldwide are linked to tobacco smoking.
