Olympic canoeist Fernando Pimenta this Saturday qualified directly for the K1 1000m final of the II World Speed Cup, which will take place on Sunday in Poznan, Poland.
The world champion at this distance secured his only place in the medal regatta, winning his series in 3.45.75 minutes, beating Argentine Agustin Verniz by 36 hundredths of a second.
Pimenta will therefore be vying for his second medal in this event after he won the K1 500m this Saturday, previously alongside Poland’s Slawomir Witczak, also a gold medalist, both in 1:45.29 minutes, while Argentina’s Agustin Wernice was third with a result of 01.13. seconds.
On Sunday, the Lima native also has the opportunity for a third consecutive podium finish in the K1 5000m final, a specialty in which he regularly wins medals.
Fernando Pimenta is the only Portuguese competing at the World Championships, while Joao Ribeiro and Messias Baptista, world champions in the 2,500m, and Teresa Portela in the 1,500m are making special preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
