Thousands of people carrying Spanish and European Union (EU) flags gathered in Madrid for a demonstration by Alberto Nunez Feijoo’s Partido Popular (PP) against the amnesty law.
The approval of this law should take place next week, at the plenary session of Congress.
Protesters gathered near Puerta de Alcalá also carried banners with slogans such as: “Spain against amnesty and corruption,” “Resign now,” or “Sanchez is a traitor and a liar.”
In addition to representatives of the PP, they were joined by politicians from the governments of José Maria Aznar and Mariano Rajoy.
This is the fifth demonstration organized by the PP, which takes place four days before the amnesty law is finalized.
Leading Spain’s government since 2018, Pedro Sánchez’s Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) has pardoned separatists convicted of attempting self-determination in 2017, changed the Criminal Code to end sedition for which others have been accused, and is now moving forward with an amnesty that is pending is in the final stages of parliamentary approval and should lead to Puigdemont’s imminent return to Catalonia.
These measures were agreed with the ERC (Vox, Brothers of Italy, PiS and, as expected after the elections, with Fidesz), which has made all Sánchez governments viable since 2018, and also, in the case of an amnesty, with JxCat, from which last year also became dependent on the PSOE to remain in power.
