Public security police detained 11 people today during a security operation for the Portuguese Cup final, all before the start of the game between Porto and Sporting.
“There were 11 detainees, eight of whom were arrested for insulting and assaulting the physical integrity of police officers, one for drug possession, one for profiteering and another for attacking the police,” explained Arthur Seraphim of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command. Lusa.
In the most problematic situation, shots were needed to “intervene” in “unrest among FC Porto fans”, with some of them confronting the forces of order, “throwing stones” and some eventually being arrested.
“After our intervention, the situation was immediately resolved,” he said, adding that “all arrests occurred before the start of the game” and that after the end of the game “no further incidents were recorded.”
At the same time, the public relations department of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command indicated that “22 people were identified on suspicion of possessing pyrotechnic items.”
Porto won their 20th Portuguese Cup, their third in a row, by beating Sporting CP 2-1 in the final after extra time in a game played at the Estadio Nacional in Jamora.
The Dragons are therefore second on the list with 20 trophies, six less than Benfica who lead the table with 26, while Sporting are third on the list with 17.
