“Dad, can I sleep with grandpa today?” These were the last words of Guillermo, one of the boys killed by his grandfather in Granada, Spain, the TV channel reported. Telechinko.
The 72-year-old barricaded himself in his home with his two grandchildren, aged 10 and 12, last Sunday after an argument with his son-in-law. Neighbors alerted authorities around 10 p.m. after noticing several moments of tension at the home in Huetor Tajar.
When authorities arrived on scene, the elderly man fired two shots through the window to indicate he was armed.
Around 11 p.m., the children’s father received a call from his eldest son, Guillermo, who asked him to spend the night at his grandfather’s house.
Due to the man’s refusal to surrender and the danger the minors were in, a UEI team from the Civil Guard arrived from Madrid and maintained contact with the elderly man.
Around 5 a.m., the man told police he couldn’t continue the conversation because he needed to get his children ready for school.
Noticing a lack of movement, agents decided to enter the home around 8:00 a.m. When they entered, they found the grandfather and two children lifeless, each in a separate room. An elderly man killed children and committed suicide.
The origin of the crime that has shocked Spain is a disagreement between a man and his son-in-law following an accident in which the septuagenarian was involved on March 19, resulting in the death of his wife and daughter, the mother of the minors.
