This Wednesday, the PSD criticized the lack of possibility of intervention on the part of the mayor of Leiria, the socialist Gonçalo López, and considered that the leadership of the PS was belittling the municipality and the district.
“For the last nine years, under the leadership of the Socialist Party, whether as Vice President or President of the Municipal Council of Leiria, Dr. Gonçalo Lopez has not had the opportunity to intervene and influence that the public investments that Leiria has long lacked are achieved “, said a statement signed by the presidents of the Social Democratic district and council of Leiria, Hugo Oliveira and Arlindo Brites, respectively.
At the official meeting dedicated to Municipality Day on May 22, Gonçalo López called for urgent investment in the health sector and a toll waiver on Highway 8 (A8), between Leiria and Marinha Grande.
“We urgently need structural investment in the health sector, including in hospitals and in strengthening human resources. Equally urgent is investment in connections to Marinha Grande, with improvements to the National Road (EN) 242 and tax exemptions. tolls on the A8 highway between these two cities,” the mayor said.
Gonçalo López emphasized that “Leiria is chronically marginalized in the distribution of public investments by the central authority, regardless of the political color that governs the country.”
In a statement, the Social Democrats note that “this is not the first time” that the mayor of Leiria “accused the central government of marginalizing Leiria in the distribution of public investments”, but note “their concern and demand just over one month after the government led PS, ceased to operate, which, both clearly and unfairly, has degraded the municipality and the district of Leiria during more than nine years of rule.”
Among the investments, PSD highlights the cleanup of the Lys River basin, the modernization of the Oeste railway line, the expansion of the Leiria Hospital, the improvement of inter-district accessibility, such as EN 242, and the construction of the new Palace of Justice.
“(…) These are examples of measures that are constantly postponed and the failure to implement them, which should also be attributed to the municipal executive led by” Gonçalo López, the statement adds, while the PSD district and the council guarantee the commitment that Leiria will receive “due public investment.”
