The parliamentary group of UNITA, Angolan’s main opposition party, on Tuesday demanded the resignation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who has recently been the target of several allegations of alleged mismanagement and corruption.
The position was expressed on Tuesday by the leader of the parliamentary group of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Liberty Chiaka, at a press conference, in which he addressed the crisis of public confidence in the judiciary, security agencies and some ministerial departments.
“It is impossible to understand, to accept that every month there is news related to the chairman of the Supreme Court,” said the leader of the parliament.
According to the deputy, the Prosecutor General’s Office should investigate the publicized complaints.
“This is what we require. Unfortunately, there is public evidence of the alleged benevolence of the direct relatives of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court,” Chiaka said, emphasizing that one cannot “put the names of people above national interests.”
The official also said that “it’s not good for the Republic of Angola, it’s bad for the judiciary that the Chief Justice, who is also the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ), bears his name constantly associated with corruption scandals.”
“It repels investment, jeopardizes trust, which in itself is already tarnished, does not benefit us. In defense of the good name of the Chairman of the Supreme Court himself, he made this position available,” he stressed.
According to the leader of the UNITA parliamentary group, “these cases are neither today nor yesterday”, recalling that there is a public and official discourse on the fight against corruption.
“And the fight against corruption cannot be carried out without an independent judiciary, without the moral authority of its agents, it is impossible. at stake, and at stake is the entire public, official discourse, propaganda,” he said.
“We are here to reaffirm our position: to demand the resignation of the chairman of the Supreme Court. Angola can no longer remain in this state. Judicial bodies are expected to concentrate, administer justice, resolve conflicts, and not manage the image, put out the fire in which the executors of justice themselves participate, so there can be no fight against corruption and justice,” he defended.
