The former commander of the GNR mountain search and rescue post, Geres, installed a video camera hidden in the watch to spy on and listen to all conversations and thus have greater control over the 17 soldiers of this unit, created in 2021.
The camera, which records image and sound and transmits 24 hours a day, was discovered by a soldier in 2022. “When the GNR transferred the information from the memory card to the computer, it saw the recordings from the Geres post, but also found images and conversations of other colleagues at the Arcos de Valdevez post, where the commander worked,” explained the soldier, who wished to remain anonymous.
Faced with this, the commander, an assistant sergeant, tried to coerce the soldiers and adopted an aggressive and vindictive attitude. “The assessments hurt all of us and the PNP always wanted to hush this matter up,” added another soldier, who wished to remain anonymous. All soldiers were interviewed as part of the agency’s investigation, but the commander was never removed. “Of course, the situation at the station was terrible. We had to live for almost two and a half years with a commander whom we did not trust and who did everything possible to harm us. Everything that should not happen at the GNR post,” the soldier said.
About two weeks ago the commander was transferred again to the post of Arcos de Valdevez. TO CMThe GNR confirms “the opening of an internal process on a disciplinary scale, which awaits a decision in the criminal case in the Braga court.”
