An experienced glider pilot (an aircraft without an engine) made an emergency landing on an agricultural field in Herdad das Casas Velhas near the municipal road 529 in the city of Évora due to weather conditions.
The pilot, who is only 34 years old and a Russian national, is an experienced pilot and said the maneuvers were “normal” for this type of flight, adding that “atmospheric conditions had changed and it was not possible to land safely at the airfield.” Therefore, this particular maneuver is necessary.”
There were no reports of injuries or damage to the glider, which belongs to an association called the Free Flight Center, which rents this type of equipment and is based in Montemor o Novo, at the Amendoeira airfield.
The alert was raised at 4.13pm by a member of the public who realized the plane had landed in a plowed field. 19 military personnel and nine vehicles from the Arraiolos and Évora Fire Department and the PNP headed to the scene, but some resources were demobilized, leaving only two ambulances with four operational personnel and the PNP, which took responsibility for the incident.
