The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third parliamentary force, presented this Saturday to the Constitutional Council (CC) the candidacy of party leader Loutero Simango to run in the October 9 presidential elections.
“By putting forward this candidacy, we are thinking about the future of new generations, the future of our children. […] This candidacy is not personal, it is not individual, it is a collective candidacy put forward by the will of the Mozambican people so that change can happen in Mozambique,” said Lutero Simango after presenting his candidacy in Maputo.
Lutero Simango said his candidacy represents the people of Mozambique who are seeking change in the country, saying the party is ready for the challenges posed by the process.
“We had no problems with signatures. Twenty thousand signatures is just a sample of many others that we received at the national level,” said the MDM president, mentioning one of the requirements that the Constitutional Council requires when nominating candidates.
Lutero Simango will run for the post with the support of the party he has led since the death of his brother Daviz Simango in 2021, who two years earlier also ran for the presidency with the support of the MDM.
Candidate submissions for the October 9 general election close on June 10.
The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition party, also presented to the Central Committee on Friday the candidacy of party leader Ossufo Momade for the post of president of the republic in the October elections.
The ruling party, the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), has not yet submitted the candidacy of Daniel Chapo to the Central Committee.
Chapo was elected as Frelimo’s candidate on the 5th of this month for the October 9 presidential elections by the ruling party’s Central Committee.
The presidential elections will be held simultaneously with legislative elections, as well as elections for governors and provincial assemblies.
The current President of the Republic and Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, is constitutionally unable to run for office again as he is currently serving his second term as head of state after being elected in 2015 and 2019.
