Greek neo-Nazi party leader Aurora Dourada, who has been on parole for the past month, is expected to return to prison after a court overturned the decision, a judicial source told Agence France Presse.
Analyzing the appeal of the deputy prosecutor of the criminal court of Lamia (central Greece) for the release of Nikos Michaloliakos, the Council of Justice considered that he had not shown evidence of good behavior and that he should be returned to prison.
Party leader Aurora Dourada, 66, recently published an appeal online against the court’s verdict, “which proves he has no regrets,” according to the same source quoted by the French news agency.
The decision to conditionally release the leader, who denied the Holocaust of the Jews by the Nazi regime, was made on May 2 for health reasons.
He was then ordered not to leave the Athens region, to report to the police once a month and not to have contact with other people convicted in the same case.
The publication in May provoked numerous reactions from left-wing parties and movements, as well as human rights organizations.
Nikos Michaloliakos was sentenced in 2020 to 13 years and six months in prison for being the leader of a “criminal organization” targeting migrants and political opponents.
Crimes attributed to the Golden Dawn party include the murder of a Greek anti-fascist rapper in September 2013.
The party was also accused of killing a Pakistani migrant in January 2013, as well as beating Egyptian fishermen and communist trade unionists.
Golden Dawn, a xenophobic and anti-Semitic organization founded by Nikos Michaloliakos, was a fringe party for decades until it benefited from the fallout from the severe economic crisis Greece faced between 2010 and 2018.
The party was elected to the Greek parliament in 2012 and then virtually disappeared from the political scene after the conviction of several leaders and elected representatives.
The legal challenge to the case, which began in 2022, is still ongoing.
