According to calculations by the international sustainable development organization Global Footprint Network, published today, on August 1, humanity will exhaust the natural resources that the Earth is able to renew during this year.
According to the organization, humanity will use in seven months what the Earth takes 12 months to regenerate.
Compared to 2023, the resource depletion that marks Ecological Crisis Day will be brought forward by one day in 2024.
This is partly due to small reductions in carbon emissions, which are overcompensated by lower levels of carbon sequestration in the oceans, according to a note from the Global Footprint Network published ahead of World Environment Day.
Portugal exhausted its resources for this year on May 28 and began using them for 2025, according to the same organization.
