José Guilherme San Marcos, 52, former commander of the Benavente Volunteer Firefighters and current Regional Commander for Emergency and Civil Protection of the Alentejo Regional Command, will lead the National Joint Task Force mission, which will depart for Turkey at 22:00. This Wednesday is the fair.
The deputy will be Joaquim Santos, Second Commander of the Regional Emergency Command for Lisbon and the Tagus Valley.
José San Marcos has experience in carrying out Portuguese rescue operations abroad. For example, he led a mission with 30 operators during the 2019 Mozambique floods.
The Joint Operational Force comprises a total of 52 operatives from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Directorate, GNR, the Lisbon Fire Engineers Regiment and INEM.
The Portuguese Mission is traveling with man-dog pairs to assist in the search.
National operatives are set to assist in a multinational mission to search for survivors of the massive earthquakes that have devastated the border region between Turkey and Syria and have killed around 12,000 people in both countries to date.
