Mozambique police seized 472 packages of various drugs on Tuesday as they were loaded into a van on Ilha de Mozambique Island, Nampula Province, in the country’s north, the corporation said on Wednesday.
The confiscation occurred after a complaint was filed, said Dersio Samuel, a spokesman for the provincial police, noting that the substances were sent to a lab for identification and quantification, with the suspicion that methamphetamine was in the seizure.
Police believe the drugs were brought by boat to a local beach.
“The persons who were about to transport the drug fled when they noticed the presence of the police,” the spokesman said.
Police said they were investigating to arrest and prosecute the owners of the drugs and car found at the scene.
International organizations place Mozambique on the route of several drug trafficking routes, mostly originating in Asia and crossing the Indian Ocean.
