The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, speaks this morning in Pedrogan Grande on the occasion of the celebration of 10 June, the day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese communities.
“Portugal is not just a memory of failure,” he said.
The President of the Republic recalled that on June 10, “in celebrating Portugal, everyone celebrates it. One in its diversity.” For Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, this day reminds us of the past, but above all it means the future.”
The head of state recalled the fires that devastated Pedrogan Grande in June 2017.
“Let 10 June 2024 mean: there will never be tragedies like those of 2017, a more equal and less discriminatory future for all countries and for all Portuguese, a missionary duty, a place for hope, trust and dreams, always, even in the most painful moments of our collective life,” said the President of the Republic.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa ended by saying that Portugal and the Portuguese are “always better than predictions of misfortune”, “we are always better than we sometimes think and many others like to think.”
“We have lived with pride for almost 900 years,” he concluded.
