Airplane carrying the Vice President of Malawi. Saulos Chilima and nine others, disappeared from radar this Monday, BBC Africa reports. Authorities fear that the politician and the other passengers were killed.
Chilima was traveling to Mzuzu, in the north of the country, to represent the government at the funeral of former minister Ralph Kasambara, who died three days ago.
An African air force plane “eluded” radar shortly after takeoff in Lilongwe, Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera ordered search and rescue operations to begin.
“Operational personnel are on the ground conducting a search and I have given strict orders to continue the operation until the aircraft is found,” he said.
In 2022, Chilima was arrested and accused of receiving money in exchange for government contracts. Last month, the court dropped the charge without justifying its decision. Prior to his political career, he held senior positions in multinational companies such as Unilever and Coca Cola.
