Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is visiting the European Parliament in Brussels on Thursday.
During a speech at the Council of Europe, Zelensky said that “what Ukraine is doing is waging an anti-European war” and accused the Kremlin of trying to destroy European values.
Among the various aspects raised, the Ukrainian president stated that it is in the values of Europe that Ukrainians feel at home and that the war is happening because “the Russian regime wants to cut Europe’s connection to Ukraine.”
“This is our Europe, these are our rules, this is our way of life. […]and this is the way home. I am here today to protect the way home for our people, for all Ukrainians, of all ages, of all political persuasions, of all social strata, of all religious beliefs, we are all united by this common European history,” he said.
The President of Ukraine insisted that joining the European Union “is the way home”, and victory in the war is “obligatory” under fear of the greatest “anti-European force” that put an end to the “European way of life”.
After applause from the entire plenum of the European Parliament, Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine shares the “European way of life” with the other 27 member states.
“This is an all-out war not over territory in one part of Europe or another,” he warned, adding that Russia “has a dictator with vast resources and stockpiles of Soviet weapons and other dictatorial regimes, in particular Iran.”
Zelensky also pointed a finger at Moscow, which “cynically, year after year, wants to destroy such values as human life, destroyed by the authorities” of the Russian Federation: “No one is valuable to them, except for those who are in the Kremlin 140 million people for them are just bodies capable of carrying weapons […]so that everyone remains obedient,” he accused.
“This is the rule of obedience,” he added, of a government that “invests in xenophobia and wants to normalize it.”
And “the answer to that is no,” continued the President of Ukraine, who also left a message to everyone who listened: “Peace and security are the preconditions for our dream.”
“If she wins, this anti-European force will put an end to all this. Only our victory will prevent all this, and it should be mandatory,” he added.
During his speech, Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned several professionals, including journalists, farmers, doctors, the military, security forces, rescuers and others, and thanked them for the help they provided to the population of Ukraine, which has found refuge from the war since February 24. in other countries.
“Europe has never been dependent on politicians, and now this cannot be an illusion. We are all interested, we are all strong, we are all capable of influencing our common result, our common victory, ”he defended.
Later, at a press conference, Zelensky, President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen met with Zelensky to answer journalists’ questions.
Among many aspects, Ursula argued that “Russia must pay for the destruction and shed blood it has caused.” The President of the European Commission assured that measures would be taken against the crimes committed by the country, and that the first step would be to collect evidence, and then move on to the creation of a court.
Zelenskiy maintained the same tone as in the speech he took in previous speeches, thanking Europe for its support. As for the talks on strengthening weapons and equipment, the Ukrainian president admitted that he had no right to “return home without results.”
