Bailiffs will go on strike again from the 28th every Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 12.30pm after talks with the government to overhaul pay scales and upgrade their careers failed. As with previous strikes, thousands of proceedings and court hearings will have to be cancelled.
According to the Union of Legal Workers (SOJ), the strike will continue for an indefinite period until “demands are met.” For the trade union structure, the reasons for the “social conflict” that lasted 18 months remain, since the government at the negotiations “did not present anything significant to change the socio-professional situation of bailiffs or their working conditions.”
On June 5, SOJ President Carlos Almeida justified the refusal to sign the agreement with Justice Minister Rita Alarcão Giudice, saying that the government’s proposal “needs to be strengthened.” Then another trade union structure – the Union of Judicial Workers – agreed on a procedural allowance.
