When the tragedy occurred, the father-in-law and brother-in-law were riding a bicycle along the Central Campo street, towards the center of Valongo. For unknown reasons, a car driven by a 23-year-old man skidded and hit a 64-year-old cyclist. The man was thrown about 10 meters into a car dealership, located next to the EN15 highway, and collided with at least two vehicles. He died on the spot in front of his daughter’s partner.
It all happened at 6:20 am. The son-in-law and a group of pilgrims heading to the sanctuary of Santa Rita in Ermesinde watched everything. Upon arrival of rescuers, the victim suffered several injuries and was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest. Firefighters and INEM crews did their best to turn the situation around, but the man could not survive the severity of his injuries and died at the scene.
After the collision, the car was stuck approximately 50 meters ahead. The driver, who received bruises, was shocked by what happened. He was taken to hospital after receiving psychological support, along with members of the cyclist’s family, who rushed to the scene when they learned of the tragedy.
GNR, through the Road Traffic Criminal Investigation Centre, conducted an investigation at the scene and is currently investigating the contours of the fatal collision. The body was taken for autopsy to the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Porto.
