Ukrainian search and rescue specialists, more accustomed to emergencies in war zones, have taken their skills to Turkey to help find survivors under the rubble and provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake that hit the country.
“There is a war going on in our country, but we know that we must help, and this help is mutual. There is no other way to do this,” Oleksandr Khorunzhiy, spokesman for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, told Reuters.
Kyiv sent a team of 88 people to Turkey, including search and rescue specialists, doctors, firefighters and animal trainers.
The Ukrainian team set up tents near the Turkish city of Antakya, close to the Syrian border, to provide temporary shelter and set up generators for the earthquake’s displaced people.
The Ukrainian team has joined rescuers from Turkey and elsewhere, including Russia, who invaded Ukraine a year ago in a conflict that Moscow says is aimed at combating a threat to Russia’s security.
