The World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) reported on Friday that atypical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was found in a dead cow in the northwestern region of Galicia in Spain.
The disease, commonly referred to as “mad cow disease”, was discovered after a 22-year-old cow was euthanized for unrelated signs of disease (BSE), reports the WHO. Reutersbased in Paris, citing information from the Spanish authorities.
The case, which was isolated, “did not enter the food chain and therefore did not pose any risk to public health and did not require any preventive health measures,” the Galician regional health service said on its website.
Last week, a case of mad cow disease, also an senile variant, was discovered in the Netherlands.
Atypical cases of mad cow disease occur sporadically and spontaneously in older cows, while the other variant, a classic and dangerous type of infection, is usually caused by contaminated animal feed.
Massive cases of mad cow disease hit cattle herds in the UK and other European countries in the 1990s, with occasional atypical cases that could lead to temporary restrictions on trade.
