‘The Taliban ruined these girls’ dreams’: Afghan teenagers despair after dropping out of school and forced into marriage

Benafasha and Asma T.They were 13 and 15 years old when Afghanistan was overrun by the Taliban and they lost the right to study. Forced into marriage, they saw their dreams of becoming independent and successful women left behind.

In May 2021, Asma was in class when bombs started going off near her high school in Afghanistan. At that time, the young woman thought that the future opened up countless possibilities for her. There were prospects that I could enter a good university. However, the Taliban regime ultimately prevented this goal from being achieved. Today, at 18 and already pregnant, the young woman just hopes that the girl she carries in her belly doesn’t suffer as much. Despite the fact that from the very beginning she knew that “she would not be able to fulfill any of her dreams.”

According to the newspaper The keeper, after her schoolyard is bombed, Asma wakes up in the hospital to learn that 85 people, most of them other students, have been killed. When the situation began to recover, the Taliban were already in power. Then I realized that I could not go back to school.

When Asma stopped being a student, she was forced to marry a man she did not know. The girl says that she begged her parents not to force her to go to an unknown man, but they did not fulfill her request.

“When I told them about my studies and my dreams, they laughed and said: “With the Taliban coming, girls will never be able to study again. It’s better to move on and get married,” she says.

Benafasha was also forced into marriage. When she moved to live with her fiancé, he immediately became aggressive, often insulting the girl and beating her.

The sister says that Benafasha, desperate and fearful, asked the Taliban court to allow her to separate, but was sent to prison instead.

“We had photographs that showed him hitting my sister, and text messages and voice recordings that showed him abusing and hitting her,” he says.

It has been more than three years since the Taliban decided that schools were only for boys and that girls and women were banned from attending educational institutions.

Cases of asthma and Benafasha They are similar to the fate of the 1.2 million Afghan teenagers who were forced to stop dreaming after the Taliban took over the country. “We have already reached 1,000 days, but there is no end date for the horror of what is happening to teenage girls in Afghanistan. The Taliban destroyed these girls’ dreams,” says Heather Barr of Human Rights Watch.

Last month, a report by the UN special rapporteur found that teenage girls in Afghanistan are more likely to experience psychological distress, including suicidal thoughts and actions.
