Mozambican police have arrested three fake agents of the State Information and Security Service (SISE) in Sofala province, in the center of the country, who were extorting people for firearms and credentials, the corporation said.
“We are here with these three detainees, accused of illegally performing public functions or a protected profession, given that they posed as SISE agents and had a certificate [de trabalho] and a pistol for extortion,” said Dersio Chakate, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) command in Sofala province, at a press conference.
Chakate said the suspects posed as Mozambican secret agents to earn money or even obtain loans from loan sharks in local communities, leaving false credentials as collateral.
They also threatened to detain the victims so as not to pay their debts, the police spokesman in Sofala continued.
“The detainees owed money and then threatened the victims not to repay the borrowed amounts. Victims who suffered from such activities by fake agents reported the matter to police authorities and PRM launched investigations that culminated in arrests,” said Dersio Chakate.
Shakate said the men arrested are part of a huge group of people involved in committing crimes.
“This gang is involved in several types of criminal activity, from illegal gun possession to gang activity, theft and home robberies,” he added.
