Mozambican Health Minister Armindo Thiago this Thursday defended the need to create a “single team” for the distribution of medicines and health supplies as a way to guarantee efficiency.
“Redistributing warehouses in the supply chain in favor of intermediate and transit warehouses strategically located will bring significant benefits, which will be summarized in reducing storage costs, transportation costs, reducing the risk of loss of warehouse stocks, as well as the speed of delivery of drugs to medical institutions,” he said Armindo Thiago.
The Governor was speaking at a meeting of the Coordinating Council for Pharmaceutical Logistics and Medical Supplies in Maputo.
According to a government official, the joint work of all institutions involved in the distribution of medicines is fundamental to the effectiveness of the Mozambican pharmaceutical logistics agency, Central de Medicamentos e Artigos Médicos (CMAM).
“The first necessary element is to accept the concept and principle used in the health sector, which is the use of scientific evidence to make decisions based on facts and not assumptions. The second element is working with all institutions in the health sector and other sectors. to ensure that its activities can proceed in the best possible way and finally strengthen its capacity as an institution,” he added.
A shortage of medicines in Mozambique’s health facilities, especially in rural areas, has been one of the main complaints of health workers, who have placed it high on their list of demands during strikes they have called in recent months to demand better working conditions.
