Two people have died on Portuguese beaches since the start of the bathing season, from May 1 to June 30, according to a report published this Monday by the National Maritime Authority (ANM).
In its assessment of the two months of the 2024 bathing season, which ends on October 30, the ANM indicates that a fatal accident occurred on one of the controlled beaches (Meia Praia) and another in one of the uncontrolled areas (Algar de Benagil), both in the district of Faro.
Two of the reported deaths were due to “sudden illness,” ANM reported.
During the first two months of the swimming season, the ANM carried out 133 rescue operations and 584 first aid operations.
The 2024 swimming season will run from May 1 to October 30, with municipalities being able to set a specific season for each district during this period.
Last year, there were 43 drowning deaths, and in 2022 there will be 38.
