Health workers say Mozambique’s National Health System is ‘in chaos’

The Association of United and Solidary Health Workers of Mozambique (APSUSM) on Sunday classified the situation in the national system as chaotic, warning that professionals, who have been in constant protest in recent months, are working without any conditions.

“There is a shortage of medicines for diseases such as malaria and high blood pressure. I can mention a recent example of what happened in Beira. [província de Sofala]in which users went on television to denounce the shortage of reagents for hemodialysis, which we consider very serious,” APSUSM Secretary General Sheila Chukela told Lusa.

The body, which represents around 65,000 health workers from across the national health system, excluding doctors, has been calling for better working conditions, overtime pay and a better structure within the sector for over a year, with a new Unified Wage Table in place.
