The fifth and final stage of the Austrian Cycling Tour will be cancelled instead of being held in honour of Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege (Coop-Repsol), who died in a crash during the race on Saturday.
“The final stage of the 73rd round of Austria will not take place due to the tragic death at yesterday’s stage. [sábado]”The cycling world is in shock. Therefore, at the request of the family and team of André Dröge, this Sunday’s stage will become a walk in memory of Patscherkofel,” the race organisers said.
Drege, 25, died in a violent fall on the descent of the Grossglockner mountain during the fourth stage of the Tour of Austria.
“The memorial ride was the clear wish of Andre’s father, his teammates and his entire team, giving the entire cycling family the opportunity to come to terms with what happened and pay tribute to Andre Dröge,” said Austrian race director Thomas Pupp.
Drege, 25, made his professional debut in 2021, has always been with one professional continental team and, according to some specialist media, could join a WorldTour team in 2025.
Italy’s Diego Ulissi (INEOS) led the Tour of Austria, the final stage of which was to take the peloton from Kufstein to Kühtai, covering 143.8 kilometres.
