Death toll in Mozambique road accident rises to seven

The death toll in a road accident that occurred on Sunday in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo, southern Mozambique, has risen from five to seven, health authorities said today.

“Six patients were admitted to the emergency department of the Maputo Central Hospital. [HCM]around 12:00, of which four were men and two were women. They were all diagnosed with multiple injuries and, unfortunately, two died,” said Jeremias Amuses, a doctor at HCM, quoted by Televisão de Moçambique.

The death toll in the accident involving a passenger van on the Maputo ring road at around 10:00 (09:00 Lisbon time) has risen to seven with the addition of two deaths reported by a doctor.

According to Mozambican authorities, the van was carrying 20 people from the religious community, 10 of whom were injured and taken to HCM and Matola Provincial Hospital.

Maputo Provincial Traffic Police spokesman Jose Novela said the accident was caused by speeding and improper overtaking.

Mozambique has recorded more than 4,800 road traffic deaths in the past five years, according to figures released on May 22 by the Mozambican government, which is calling for community involvement in the fight against the scourge.

“The road safety situation in Mozambique is very worrying, as in the last five years, for example, 4,812 people have died on our roads in 5,459 road accidents,” said Ambrosio Sitoe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
