A Spanish court on Monday declared the “Democratic Tsunami” trial null and void as of the end of July 2021, which could have implications for terrorism charges against former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont.
The Criminal Division of the National High Court has upheld the appeal of the defendant in the Democratic Tsunami case, Marta Molina, and declared null and void all the procedures that the investigating judge agreed to after July 29, 2021, the date on which he issued the order to extend the investigation for six months, when the deadline had expired the day before.
In a ruling cited by Spanish news agencies, he ruled in favour of the appellant that the extension was untimely and instructed Judge Manuel García Castellón to decide whether to continue the case or close it. This decision can only be based on the steps agreed before 29 July 2021.
