A young man who underwent the world’s first face and hand transplant has revealed he has found love five years after an accident that left 80% of his body covered in burns.
Joe DiMeo, 24, from New Jersey, USA, was in a tragic accident after crashing his car in July 2018. The young man fell asleep at the wheel after leaving work, crashed his car, the car caught fire and Joe DiMeo only survived because people pulled him out of the fire.
In the following months, the young man underwent 20 reconstructive surgeries. Joe’s face was donated by a stroke victim who died at the age of 48.
In accordance with Daily mailNurse Jessica Coby, 32, read about all the surgeries and was inspired by Joe’s positive outlook on life, so she sent him a message on Instagram.
The couple bonded over their love of Boston Terriers and gradually got to know each other better.
“Despite everything he’s been through, he’s still positive and carefree. I love him inside because he’s a funny guy, he knows what he wants out of life, and he’s very mature for his age,” Jessica said.
