A French court has opened a formal investigation into allegations of illegal funding for Marine Le Pen’s 2022 presidential campaign. The case concerns alleged crimes of embezzlement, forgery, fraud and illegal borrowing.
In addition to this case, the leader of the National Union will be tried at the end of the year for misuse of European Parliament funds.
Meanwhile, the left-wing alliance that won Sunday’s election continues talks to choose the next prime minister, and Socialist Olivier Faure has indicated he is willing to take on the role.
The centrist opposition has already threatened to call a vote of no confidence in any government that includes ministers from “France Unbowed”.
