French President Emmanuel Macron broke his silence on Wednesday following legislative elections in which the left won without an absolute majority, saying that “republican forces” must commit to building a “solid majority.”
“I call on all political forces that identify with republican institutions, the rule of law, parliamentarism, a European orientation and the defence of France’s independence to engage in sincere and loyal dialogue in order to build a solid, necessarily pluralistic, majority for the country,” he wrote, the head of the French state, in a letter to the French people published in the regional press.
Macron said his decision to appoint a new prime minister “suggests giving political forces a little time to work out these commitments” in France’s National Assembly, as none of the three main blocs won an absolute majority on Sunday.
