The government of Burkina Faso, an African country in the Sahel ruled by a military regime since a coup in 2022, banned homosexuality on Thursday, adding to the list of countries that ban such behavior.
“Homosexuality and related practices are now prohibited and punishable by law,” said Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, quoted by the French news agency France-Presse (AFP), who noted that penalties have not yet been defined and that the text approved by the Council of Ministers as part of the new Personal and Family Code has not yet been adopted by the deputies of the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT).
Until now, Burkina Faso had no law penalizing homosexuality, but last August the High Council of Social Communications decided to “ban the broadcast of television channels that promote homosexuality.”
