The European Union (EU) will have stricter rules on combating human trafficking from Sunday after a new European directive came into force, giving countries two years to change it.
“On 14 July, the revised EU Anti-Trafficking Directive will enter into force, with stricter rules on combating human trafficking. Member States have until 15 July 2026 to transpose these new rules into national law,” the EU leader said in a statement.
The previous Community directive on the matter had been in force since 2011, but fellow EU legislators decided to update it in response to developments in recent years, with new forms of exploitation, especially online, and more diversified illicit means and profits, with estimates that the economic losses caused by human trafficking amount to €2.7 billion per year in society.
