Beijing said on Monday that US balloons have flown over the People’s Republic of China at least 10 times over the past year, heightening tensions after an alleged Chinese spy balloon was shot down over the United States.
“American balloons often illegally enter the airspace of other countries. Over the past year, American high-altitude balloons have flown over Chinese airspace more than 10 times without permission from (Beijing) authorities. United States The United States must take into account and change its attitude before confronting and accusing others of slander,” said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for Beijing diplomacy, said he was “not aware” of the latest unidentified flying objects shot down in the US and Canada, accusing Washington of “overreacting.”
However, on Sunday, a US fighter jet shot down an “unidentified (flying) object” over Lake Huron, Michigan, on the orders of President Joe Biden.
This is the fourth case in eight days, according to US authorities.
The Pentagon, according to the Associated Press, said it was “an extraordinary series of unprecedented events in US airspace.”
Gen. Glen VanHerke, head of the US Northern Command (NORAD), said part of the sighting of the “objects” (balloons) is because the alert level has been in place since last January.
