At least 22 people were killed and 30 were hospitalized after a school collapsed in the Nigerian city of Jos, Plateau state, on Friday. The government described the situation as an “unavoidable tragedy” due to the instability of the building, according to Al Jazeera.
The tragedy brought a crowd to the scene, concerned about saving the children, young people and teachers inside the building.
The Plateau State government attributed the tragedy to the “weak structure of the school and its location near the river bank” and called on schools facing similar problems to close their operations.
“The government describes the incident as a tragedy that could have been avoided, citing the weak structure of the school and its unsafe location on the river bank,” said a statement released by the Plateau municipality.
The government has ordered local hospitals to provide treatment without documentation or payment. Schools with similar safety issues have been asked to close.
According to Al JazeeraOver the past two years, there have been more than a dozen incidents involving buildings.
