An Italian sports journalist has been wrongly identified as the gunman who shot dead Trump during a rally in the US. Marco Violi has promised to sue those who spread false information online, Reuters reports.
A post widely shared on social media site X reads: “According to the Butler Police Department, the Trump shooter was arrested at the scene and identified as Mark Viollets, a member of Antifa.” In the post, you can see a photo of Marco Violi.
The journalist is the editor of the website romagiallorossa.it, a fan site for the Roma club.
“I categorically deny my involvement in this situation,” said Marco Violi, who lives in Rome and was surprised by the nightly notifications from X and Instagram about misinformation.
The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks. He was shot down at the scene.
Violi accused two Italian X users of spreading false information and will file a police complaint against them, as well as the media outlets that shared their data.
An Italian journalist says he has been a victim of X users for years. “I sincerely ask you to leave me alone because I have been a victim of this since 2018,” he complained, according to Reuters.
