Former President Donald Trump assured Sunday that he is healthy and called for “unity” hours after he was shot dead at a rally in Pennsylvania in what the FBI believes was an assassination attempt that further escalated already explosive political tensions in America.
Trump suffered minor injuries to his right ear, grazed by a bullet fired by a 20-year-old from a rooftop about 120 meters from the platform where the former president spoke, in a blatant breach of security. Before he was shot by a police sniper, the shooter fired several shots, killing a Trump supporter on the bench and seriously wounding two others.
“There is no place for this type of violence in America,” said President Joe Biden, who ordered the cancellation of a series of campaign ads that criticized his rival for the White House. The attack, which came on the eve of the Republican National Convention, further heightens tensions ahead of the election, with several Trump supporters directly blaming Biden and Democrats for the attack.
