Trump also said he is healthy and will attend as planned the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday in Milwaukee, where he will be confirmed as the party’s nominee for November’s presidential election. Shortly after Saturday’s attack, Trump thanked the Secret Service and other security forces for their quick response and offered condolences to the family of the supporter killed in the shooting.
Images that have spread around the world show the exact moment Trump puts his hand to his right ear as he is punched, before being lowered behind the podium and covered by security guards. As he is led off the stage with a bloodied face, the former president defiantly raised his fist in the air and repeatedly shouted at his supporters: “Fight! Fight!”
The shooter used his father’s shotgun.
Authorities have identified the gunman who tried to kill Trump as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, just over 12 miles from the rally. He used an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle registered to his father and had explosive devices in the trunk of his car. The motive for the attack is under investigation, but all signs point to politics. Crooks was a registered Republican, but in 2021 he made a $15 donation to a Democratic political action committee. He has no known criminal record.
