Hungary’s rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) on Monday criticized the European Commission’s decision, based on “political considerations,” to “cherry-pick” public institutions by refusing to participate in the usual biennial leadership kick-off visit.
“The EU is an international organisation consisting of its Member States, the European Commission is an EU institution. […] and cannot choose the institutions and member states with which it wants to cooperate,” Hungarian Minister for European Affairs Boka Janos responded in a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
“Are all Commission decisions now based on political considerations?” the official asked, reacting to the news that the president of the Community’s executive, Ursula von der Leyen, has decided not to make the usual visit of the College of Commissioners to the country, which holds the rotating EU presidency, Hungary, which is also refusing to attend a high-level representation due to recent disagreements.
