French President Emmanuel Macron accepted the resignation of Gabriel Attal’s government on Tuesday.
According to Reuters, the prime minister will remain in office until a new government is appointed after the inconclusive elections. Experts say the caretaker government will manage day-to-day affairs but will not be able to present new laws to parliament or make major changes.
His role will include ensuring the smooth running of the Olympic Games, which begin on July 26.
“Tackling current affairs means implementing the measures already taken and managing emergencies that arise. Nothing more, nothing less,” said Matthieu Disant, a law professor at Pantheon-Sorbonne University in Paris, as quoted by Reuters.
